Position Overview:
The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Responsibilities include providing patient care by determining animal requirements, conducting examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, assisting with feeding and caring for patients, maintaining medical supplies and equipment, overseeing triage and discharging patients, and maintaining patient medical records.
Essential Position Functions:
- Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews, reviewing care plans and records, completing laboratory tests and studies, and diagnostic imaging.
- Care for patients by taking vital signs; collecting samples; drawing blood; administering medications, drugs, and vaccines; and cleaning, bandaging and wrapping wounds.
- Support patient examinations and operations by assembling required supplies and instruments, securing and bringing patients to examination rooms, and restraining patients; aids as directed by the veterinarian.
- Provide excellent pet care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration.
- Provide extensive surgical assistance by preparing pets, scrubbing, shaving, acting as a surgical nurse, placing catheters, and operating specific surgical equipment and supplies.
- Perform dental cleanings, polishing, and intraoral radiographs; perform nerve blocks; assists with dental procedures and surgeries.
- Obtain and verify medications.
- Ensure that patients have food and water, clean patients' rooms, cages, and equipment; observe patients for clinical signs of disease.
- As directed, fill prescriptions and administer medications, including proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
- Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing and disinfecting holding and operating areas, storing sterile supplies, verifying shelf life, following standards and procedures, and in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
- Maintain medical records by documenting patients’ conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database in an accurate and timely manner.
- Communicate with the pet owner about the status of the patient, as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining equipment supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
- Maintain inventory, place orders for needed supplies, verify, and maintain receipts.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional journals.
- Release pets to their owners as directed; ensure that every animal released is clean and properly groomed before their release.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Manager or practice.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two or more years of experience with veterinary appointments, procedures, and surgeries.
- Must currently be a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) within New York State.
Position Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Knowledge of the preparation, monitoring, and recovery of pets receiving surgery, as well as basic pet nursing.
- Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
- Understand and limit the potential exposure to bites, scratches, and potential injuries.
- Able to restrain patients according to standard procedures.
- Fill prescriptions and monitor sedation procedures as directed by the veterinarian.
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with pets experiencing severe stress, illness, or pain.
- Communicate and approach job duties in a professional and mature manner.
- Must be flexible with scheduling and able to work some weekends and holidays.
- At times this can be a strenuous job that requires a lot of lifting, cleaning, and constant motion.
- Depending on the functional area of assignment, tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and/or extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
- May include some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Some tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting or carrying moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds).
- Answer phones and perform other duties as needed by the hospital.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Manager or practice.

Position Overview: Busy animal hospital in Beacon, NY is seeking a full-time Veterinary Receptionist/Technician Assistant. Looking for a friendly, personable, detail-oriented, outgoing candidate who is reliable and can multi-task with a positive attitude. Previous veterinary experience strongly preferred, as well as strong customer service skills. Experience with AviMark is a plus. Flexible schedule with whole and half day shifts needed, as well as some Saturday mornings. This position contributes to the success of a high-performing organization committed to delivering superior care and exceptional service, and performs a range of administrative and customer service tasks, providing valuable support to the hospital.
Essential Functions:
- Offers owners and potential owners a warm and friendly greeting in person or on the phone; answers their questions or routes them to the correct department.
- Provides excellent customer service in-person, over the phone, and during high-stress situations.
- Able to identify conditions over the phone that can potentially be emergencies and schedules those appointments appropriately.
- Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.
- Identifies and works compassionately with clients in various emotional states.
- Responds to emails and inquiries about the range of services the practice provides and the species it treats; refers to the appropriate department/staff member as needed.
- Coordinates the flow of pets and owners in the lobby; placates owners distressed by long waits, scheduling glitches, and other problems.
- Recognizes the symptoms of pets and owners in crisis; handles basic medical emergencies appropriately, ensuring safety and well-being.
- Assists owners when picking up medications, retail or special dietary products; answers questions; and provides information about services and products.
- Inputs data to practice management software to check pets in; makes simple postings to accounts; compiles data for various reports.
- Types and edits a variety of emails, correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other material ensuring accuracy.
- Receives and distributes incoming mail and faxes; processes and stamps outgoing mail.
- Performs cashiering duties; processes refunds, returns, and credits as needed.
- Organizes and processes payment plans; assists with billing statements and collections.
- Coordinates and schedules appointments; calls owners scheduled for the next day to remind them of their appointments and any special instructions, such as the need for fasting, withholding or administering medications.
- Obtains previous records from other facilities and adds to patient chart.
- Calls clients whose pets are overdue for vaccines, medication refills, etc.
- Is or will be able to learn basic veterinary medicine terminology.
- Is or will become familiar with retail products, medications, vaccinations, routine testing, and heartworm and flea preventatives and be able to confidently discuss with clients.
- Reconciles cash drawer and performs end-of-day duties for accurate financial transactions.
- Inputs and manages data in practice management software, including billing and accounts.
- Able to restrain pets appropriately and assist Veterinarians when treating patients.
- Willing to clean rooms, walls, floors, empty trash as needed.
